The South African Human Rights Commission has given some KwaZulu-Natal district municipalities a year to give feedback on the steps they have taken to improve service delivery.

The SAHRC released its final report into the province's water crisis on Monday. 

 

It said municipalities and entities violated the rights of residents who depend on them for access to the precious resource.

Commissioner Philile Ntuli said Amajuba District, eThekwini, Harry Gwala, iLembe, Ugu, Ungungdlovu, Imzinyathi, Uthukela, Uthungulu and Zululand Municipalities need to get their house in order. 

 

"They are to implement a appropriate customer conflict division call center request to insure the maintenance of a register of complaints, to a maximum of a six-hour turnaround time to restore water service delivery."

 

Water service authorities were also given 12 months to identify ageing infrastructure and carry out maintenance.

 

"The water boards must undertake necessary infrastructure maintenance and replacements to insure continuity in water services provisions to water services authority,” said Ntuli.
